Definition :-
The word symptom (G. symptoma - anything that happens) means any change in the health of the organism which is felt by the patient himself, remarked by those around him and observed by the physician (sec.6, Organon of Medicine).
Dr.Kent says: "Every symptom (subjective or objective) is indicative of a deviation from the normal state of health". He also says, "All curable diseases make themselves known to the physician by sign and symptom".
According to Dr. Stuart Close : "In general, a symptom is any evidence of disease, or change from a state of health."
Dr. H. A. Roberts says : "Symptoms are the only representative expression of the diseased state."
Dr. Elizabeth Wright defies symptoms as : "Symptoms, to the homoeopaths are the language of the body expressing its disharmony and calling for the similar remedy."
Thus to know disease thoroughly Hahnemann enjoins to depend upon only on the signs and symptoms. Any other way to understand the disease would have no sound basis. It would be conjectural, hypothetical and misleading.
Explanation :-
In the state of health, the spiritual vital force controls and co-ordinates harmoniously the different physiological functions of the human body, so that the man feels a sensation of well being. But when the vital force is deranged dynamically, this derangement will be reflected correspondingly in the functioning of the different physiological activities which will be manifested outwardly through the material body as the abnormal signs and symptoms, the totality of which constitutes the disease.
Significance :-
(i) Symptoms are the only conceivable picture of the disease. They are the language of nature showing as clearly as the daylight the internal nature of the sick person. They are the evidence of the disease.
(ii) They are the only indications to choose a curative remedy.
(iii) They indicate the curability of the disease.
(iv) They are the indications of future course and termination of the disease. ·
