Definition :-
The pathognomonic symptoms are the common symptoms of the disease on which diagnosis can be made. According to Kent these are symptoms related to the diagnosis of a disease condition.
Example :-
Appearance of rashes on the skin on the fourth day of fever with dry cough and coryza are the pathognomonic symptoms of measles.
Importance :-
(i) They are the basis of diagnosis of disease and hence very important to allopathic physicians for treatment.
(ii) In homoeopathy, they have least value in the selection of a homoeopathic remedy. But these symptoms, when qualified, become important in the selection of a curative rem-edy. They can also help in estimating the curability of a case and in palliative tr.eatment.
(iii) They may help in the general management of a case, in understanding its prognosis etc.
